Helpful information on the basics of international car shipping companies can be found in this article. Shipping methods are discussed, with the consumer's needs in view.

International Car Shipping Basics

When searching for an international car shipping company, the variety of companies seems endless. The method of transport also varies, so knowing the following information should help you narrow the playing field. First, finding a shipping broker is a great way to shop. The brokers have already weeded out many of the disreputable companies off their own list. There is a difference between a lead generating internet marketer, however, and a broker. Be sure you're dealing with a broker versus simply a lead generator who may not care about your experience. Getting free quotes from multiple providers gives you more control over pricing and quality. Finding brokers online is pretty simple, use names you trust or companies with good consumer reviews.

How will it ship?

There are a few main ways shipping occurs by land or sea. By land, the most common transports are the transport truck. If your car is a collector's item, then request a closed transport. Your vehicle is driven into an enclosed trailer, protecting it from the elements. In most cases, the transport will be open to the elements, and several vehicles will be loaded onto a skeletal-framed trailer designed for the purpose. Both are usually door-to-door.

If your car travels by sea, then the cheapest form of travel will be a "Ro-Ro" system, or roll on, roll off. This is a huge ship used by major auto manufacturers. The car is rolled directly below decks, secured, and is brought to the nearest port. Another system is container shipping, a large, water and air tight container is used. Ro-Ro ports ship about every 10 days in most ports, container shipping about every 7 days. Expect about a 7-10-day trip, though it can take as long as 4-6 weeks in choppy weather.
