Shipping Your Car to Ohio and Tips on the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles
When it's time to move to Ohio, the land where The Drew Cary Show was set, home of the Wright brothers (from Dayton, Ohio - the two fellows who invented the airplane), and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame - and you need to find car transport companies that can be trusted with shipping your car, then it's time to think about a car shipping broker. The broker has picked from the cream of the crop - the car transport companies that can be trusted with one of your most prized possessions. You don't have all the time in the world, either, to do proper investigation into who's who in the car shipping business, so finding a broker online is the first order of business to get the ball rolling.
Further, when you're moving to Ohio - or anywhere, really - that isn't the time to sell your old vehicle and buy another. Truly, the cost savings of simply shipping what you already have is worth the effort. When you hire a professional company to do this service for you, the 'effort' is truly all theirs.
Once you've picked a dependable company that's carrying sufficient insurance to keep your car safe, and a company that has a proven track record, then the battle is about halfway done! The other half of moving your car(s) to Ohio is ensuring you've done your proper research at the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles, also known as the BMV. Here are some considerations from their website, which can be found at:
Getting Your Ohio Driver's License
The first step is making sure you have your documents, and to be sure you provide proof of your Social Security Number, birth certificate and Ohio residence. The website has detailed information (above).
The state of Ohio is pretty good about waiving the normal testing for those with a valid non-Ohio driver's license, so long as the driver doesn't have any driving restrictions pertaining to him or her. The booklet Digest of Ohio Motor Vehicle Laws, available from the Ohio Dept. of Public Safety or a local license agency, contains all the information on obtaining an Ohio driver's license. The local State Highway Patrol Exam Station will provide you with a written/vision test, but again - Ohio is good about waiving the test is valid licensure from out of state can be furnished.
Upon passing these exams, the fee is $23 to get your license from the local license agency - be prepared to surrender your out of state license at this time. The state will then want to inspect your vehicle to be sure it isn't stolen, and will hand you the results. Vehicle registration fees depend upon the county you reside in, see the site for details.
The car will have to be registered and licensed for Ohio as well. Ohio requires two license plates to be displayed, with current registration tags.
With fifty percent (50%) of America's population living within a 500 mile radius of Columbus, Ohio, it becomes apparent why so many laws may exist regarding stolen vehicles and the like. The truth of the matter is, even given all of the red tape (which wasn't covered exhaustively here), it is still worth the effort to own your own vehicle as you navigate the state. These laws are put in place to address real concerns for Ohio citizenry, and not meant to bog down the system. Once you're through the system, you'll soon see that vehicle ownership is simply a must in this great state.
